The great author Mark Twain mentioned India as "India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only." I quoted it here because India is a large country with 29 states, more than 50 languages and endless number of cultures. So it is  like 29 different countries when you go for a product marketing. The culture, tradition and taste were different. India have a good list of recipes in all these states. The recipes were cultural / geographical / climatic specific.

There is an untapped and huge amount of market for organised and centralised food distribution and production. If we travel from South to North and West to East , we can see different sort of low cost foods using the locally available items. Now  the urban population in India is getting health awareness and going for low fat, high nutritious low pesticide affected foods. In the rural markets people love to eat the locally available food with a good ambiance and affordable to there budget. 

For a start up, its a good option to have a well managed and clean centralised kitchen system to prepare locally available foods with variety ingredients and tastes. These developed foods can be distributed to places around 10-15km radius through specially designed vehicles or resellers. The centralised kitchen helps to produce all the varieties in a single roof so that you will have the attention on the preparing one and also can save a lot of cost in capital infrastructure and man power. This allows better utilisation of manpower too.By creating a series of resellers ( can include the energetic housewives , bakery, hotel and entrepreneurs) you can actually increase the reach of your food. You can manage a descent percentage of money as commission for this. Also you can start involving your own distribution channel along with this by creating  specially designed vehicles and attractive designs on them. 

If you dont have much investment for t he kitchen and little knowledge in cooking , i suggest for listing out some recipes and findout best cooking mom's aroung your home town. Make an arrangement with them and assign them with each recipes. They will invest for the food and you can collect from them for sales. In return you can gave them a fair remuneration for each piece. So this can create a great social revolution as well as multi level entrepreneurship in the society. You can be a reformer as well as can make your pocket thicker :) . 

You can try with Snacks and sweets at first and later can go for break fast, lunch and dinner as per the demand. I think in India you will get fair amount as subsidy and Grant from the Government for these typeof social entrepreneurship.

India is one of the most youthful country in the world with more than 65% of the total population is under 35 years old. Indian fitness & slimming industry currently pegged at USD 0.78 billion is stated to grow at a CAGR of 25% to reach USD 2.4 Billion by 2015. We would not be surprised if the industry outperforms our ballpark figure. The new young generation is aspired with new hopes and having a good vision towards there health. With the access of internet and the raising influence of Bollywood (Hindi film Industry) and the well fitnessed action heros, The young brigade of India is now need to became slim and wants good shape for there body. The body fitness is now a days important for Gents as well as ladies. In the last decade men and women shows reluctance to go for a gymnasium and thought it was a waste of time and money. But when the Bollywood actors and actress became more slim and fit, the total outlook of the youth were changed . The situation was changed also because of the improved financial condition and  education qualification of the youths.

It is definitely a promised market in India for Health and Fitness. If one should interested in building  a start up in these sector, then i am sure there is a huge market waiting for you. The Indian condition of health and fitness is entirely different from that of the other countries. Indian Youth needs muscle extension with fun, privacy and trust. To be precisely in the Gymnasium it should have a clean and musical environment with a special program to reduce the obesity and pot - belly. Also they are expecting  a diet training as well as body tuning. Lots of ayurvedic home remedies available for easy reduction of weight as well as mass. So i recommend to have a Indianised approach of fitness in the start up plan. Also ladies wont recommend to work out with men, so allocate a special place for them or start a different time for there work out. In a Gymnasium the major expense will be for the machinery and land. Please note if u can start a gymnasium  with best results, you can further increase your presence  by giving the business for franchisees. In the initial time, you can have a deal with the machinery dealers or manufacturers for a better discount or a customised EMI. You can apply for bank with the help of any Youth center or club. before starting the Gym, you should have a thorough plan on the execution especially on the weight reduction program and the inclusion of ayurvedic therapy for weight reduction. You can attract youth by starting a campaign in college, clubs and the sports grounds. Facebook is a good medium for advertisement. 

Once you mature into a certain level, think for a franchisee option as these segment is having good growth and can expand your business without spending much cash. I have one friend started Gymnasium at his home and now rents the machines and dumbbells to school children for a small amount, but surprisingly he started his own Gym after 2 years from the money he collected from these rentals.

As Indians have a strong acceptance with Swamy Vivekananda, the young generation is now following his words " Those who have a strong body can only build a strong mind" .. Yes the Life style diseases are gripping its presence in India. Heart attack, stroke, Cholesterol etc were a common disease in India and youth were very much aware about the impact and aftermath too.. So a strong need of physical fitness and slimming is essential for Indians and the number of health fitness institute were very low compared to the demand. Indian Automobile industry is one of the largest, growing and promising sector in the world. The Automobile industry can be mainly classifieds into  Consumer vehicles and Heavy vehicles. In the Consumer vehicles it self we can generally classifies vehicles based on the wheels. In India Two wheelers, Three wheelers and Four wheelers were popular. Indian two wheeler industry is the world's largest manufacturers of motorcycles.As for a start up 'am here going to describe about the opportunities hidden in the automobile sector in India.  To give more focus we can zoom in to the two wheeler market in India.

The Indian  Two wheeler market is like an ocean, with around 13.8 million unit sales per year. It has over crossed the Chinese market with 13.6 m production.The Indian Two wheeler market is still growing on an average of around 4%. We have around 4 million 4 wheelers and around 14 million two wheelers produced every year. We are actually sitting in top of a gold mine!!!!  As per the industry research India doesn't have sufficient  'Garages 'for the maintenance of the vehicle.  There is a huge opportunity awaiting for an organised low cost garage network across the country. As of now some authorized service centers were there for the maintanance.

For a business start up , automobile maintenance business is a very lucrative and gave  fast ROI. For starting up these business , you should have a basic knowledge about the industry and the mechanical part. The following things needed for starting a small two wheeler garage (My assumption)

1) Skilled labour - 2 nos

2) Floor space - min 500 sqft

3) Tools - As per industry standards

You should purchase all the spare parts from an authorised dealer and can earn the profit from that in addition to the service charge. As per my observation most of the maintanance work involve  the wear and tear and oil replacement. So if you are smart enough, you can set up these garage in a second hand truck or van. Thus you can avoid the initial cost for land . More over the advantage of this is you can advertise this as a mobile garage unit.

When your business grows, you can built a  common maintenance yard and can use these mobile vans for small repairs.  Better service, affordable rates and proper communication will definitely help you to win the race. If am not wrong , i think minimum you can earn more than Rs 2000 from a garage .

Building a chain of Garage will be an innovative business and in future you can distribute a "Passport" program to your clients for making them close with you. Each proper service with you will help them earn points and if they refer somebody, additional points will be added to there account.

Wedding is considered as the most auspicious ceremony for every Indians. In typical Indian weddings , the rituals may lead upto 2 days. Wedding is considered as the sacred one and it will be only did infornt of a priest with tying a holy knot to the bride. Marriages may be made in heaven, but they have to be paid for, right here, on earth :)

In India on an average around 1crore (10 million) weddings are happening /year. Marriage is considered as the occasion for showing there wealth, family status and pride for Indians. When calculating the annual wedding budget of Indians, you will be literally freezed. The Indian wedding market size worth Rs 19,0000 crore (1.9 Trillion) , Which will be higher than the annual budget of small African countries. The market is growing at a constant pace 0f 20-30% per year.The expansion of middle income class and the improved per capita income will increase the spending in the coming years. I found the marriage market is mainly an unorganised business sector. Most of the players were local vendors and follows traditional methods. With the invent of new technology , we can capitalise the unorganised sector. The marriage market consist of mainly the following segments

India is one the largest growing telecom market in numbers.It is one of the substantial market in terms of telecom density. It has a strong subscriber base of more than 950 million mobile users and a Tele-density of more than 79%. The explored Indian mobile market worth more than 38.5billion USD .Over the total telecom subscribers, around 65% were from Urban areas. The rural area is yet to be tapped and worth billions. So from this statistical figure we can Indian mobile market is a 'Gold mine' isn't it?. But actually the truth is different. India is one of the weakest mobile market in terms of ARPU (average Revenue Per User). ARPU in India is around 1.9 USD were comparing to the 46.5 USD of US and 32.0 USD of UK. Indian companies are struggling to maintain its revenue and profit stream as the voice revenue is declining per user but at the same time the mvas revenue is inclining. But we have hell lot of opportunity to tackle additional revenue in the telecom sector. When more and more VAS providers added to the value chain and supply system of a telecom provider, the revenue can be increased. But the companies with innovative ideas in this sector were low comparing to other service sectors. I think the main reason for the shortfall is due to the Govt: Policies, Changing mindset and interest of customers and the monopolistic attitude of Telecom Service providers.

Still VAS means wallpapers, ringtones , celebrity photos , news - whether updates etc  for majority of Indians. I now a lot of companies working with unique features but these messages were not rightly transferred to the users. value addition on Education, Banking , Health  etc were some examples. In a brief the companies were not satisfying the real need of the user, but just pushing low priority items to the user with hectic marketing and PR, so that the user were forced to accept that. 

Possible solutions for a start up in mobile sector

I think there are several areas were a start up can grow very fastly and also contribute good revenue for service providers through the following solutions.

Micro Insurance

i think the medical and life insurance coverage of Indians were below 50% of the total population. A huge unexplored market is still open there. The main reason for the insurance is the lack of distribution channel and the unavailability of low premium insurances. The average middle class family is ignoring the insurance due to the premium amount. The premium has to pay either as online or through bank. If it is possible to make the payment collected from his mobile account (Prepaid or post paid) probably the logistics issue can be solved also if the collection is daily or weekly, the premium charge would be much lower for the customer. In this business, the service provider has to minimise his revenue sharing terms. When the number becomes higher that compensate the slashing of revenue share. I think govt doesn't have any regulation for payment till 5000 Rs. But the insurance premium should not exclude 500 rs per month. 

 

Mobile based employment exchange 

This is a good opportunity for a start up to engage in a mobile based employment exchange. In India the blue collar and semi skilled labour database is not available readily. So if somebody can collect the locally available database of masons, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, automobile mechanics, freelance employees , real estate agents etc , and joins them in the application, probably that will be a huge business. The job seeker and the job provider can be part of this network. If somebody needs a labour for a day, he can send an SMS to a shortcode number and that will be charged premium. Audio Books 

 This is a product which is getting very popular now a days and there is immense opportunity for audio books for those who loves to hear stories. This can be educational, motivational or even novels. I actually inspired by this idea from friend Mr. Vinod. In western countries this is getting popularised and in India it is in  nascent stage. So lets collect rare books and use this channel :)
