The great author Mark Twain mentioned India as "India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech,
the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of
tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of
man are treasured up in India only." I quoted it here because India is a large country with 29 states, more than 50 languages and endless number of cultures. So it is like 29 different countries when you go for a product marketing. The culture, tradition and taste were different. India have a good list of recipes in all these states. The recipes were cultural / geographical / climatic specific.
There is an untapped and huge amount of market for organised and centralised food distribution and production. If we travel from South to North and West to East , we can see different sort of low cost foods using the locally available items. Now the urban population in India is getting health awareness and going for low fat, high nutritious low pesticide affected foods. In the rural markets people love to eat the locally available food with a good ambiance and affordable to there budget.
For a start up, its a good option to have a well managed and clean centralised kitchen system to prepare locally available foods with variety ingredients and tastes. These developed foods can be distributed to places around 10-15km radius through specially designed vehicles or resellers. The centralised kitchen helps to produce all the varieties in a single roof so that you will have the attention on the preparing one and also can save a lot of cost in capital infrastructure and man power. This allows better utilisation of manpower too.By creating a series of resellers ( can include the energetic housewives , bakery, hotel and entrepreneurs) you can actually increase the reach of your food. You can manage a descent percentage of money as commission for this. Also you can start involving your own distribution channel along with this by creating specially designed vehicles and attractive designs on them.
If you dont have much investment for t he kitchen and little knowledge in cooking , i suggest for listing out some recipes and findout best cooking mom's aroung your home town. Make an arrangement with them and assign them with each recipes. They will invest for the food and you can collect from them for sales. In return you can gave them a fair remuneration for each piece. So this can create a great social revolution as well as multi level entrepreneurship in the society. You can be a reformer as well as can make your pocket thicker :) .
You can try with Snacks and sweets at first and later can go for break fast, lunch and dinner as per the demand. I think in India you will get fair amount as subsidy and Grant from the Government for these typeof social entrepreneurship.
